I got the website address from Frank Morley and have given myself a crick in the neck with 3 nights looking at the photos and reading things. I have made a long list of names from the photos and will let you have them. I have very fond memories of HGS particularly the sport and the social side of life at school. What a speedy response! I am trying to match it. When the body decided my PE days were over I retrained to teach English as a second language so I have been doing that for a few years and I am going to do Homestay/Tuition for Japanese students now for a while. HGS certainly turned out some PE teachers didn’t it? I still have my Yorkshire accent so my Aussie friends think its a big joke that I teach it to foreign students. Golf is my game now and in fact the season starts next week. I will keep an eye out for a reunion as I travel back and forth quite regularly these days.

The hockey played by the 1st XI has been of a high standard, the defence combining well together and the forwards passing the ball wisely between them. As a result the attack has been excellent, scoring 49 goals and only conceding 18 goals. Team spirit and enthusiasm has been excellent and deserves special mention.
Unfortunately the 2nd XI has had only one victory this season, this being due mainly to their failure to attend practices and to lack of enthusiasm. The juniors have shown great interest, and an U.14 XI was formed at the end of the season. Their enthusiasm is a promising sign of future success.

Just seen item in “girls’ arch” section re cricket pavillion. It was moved to the “top of a pile of earth” to make way for the new science block, but until then was roughly near the (then) new biology lab. Will try to get round to forwarding some photos.

You are in that special position, like Terry McCroakam, of having been on “both sides of the fence” - pupil and teacher. Photos and experiences would be very welcome to our audience. The site has been set up to record what we can of HGS. As far as I am aware, there is no internet record of the school apart from this one. As more people contact the site, so the record becomes more complete. I think it would be a great shame if HGS were simply allowed to disappear into the mists of time. Please help in any way you can.

Batsmen and bowlers seem to have found their form at last and we look forward to finishing the season with victories. Last year's outstanding achievement tends to overshadow this year's promising performance. As only five of last year's team remained, the results are quite creditable. Because the back division had to be remoulded, it lacked drive in attack during the early part of the season, and consequently the tries were scored from the back row and scrum-half positions. Later on, the backs developed speed; they showed vitality in attack and stalwartness in defence. This, together with the zeal of the forwards, produced a well-balanced side. Trueman's exhilarating play deserves special mention. Our sincere thanks go to Mr Tate and Mr Taylor for their unceasing encouragement and advice. As this is Mr Taylor's last season, I wish, on behalf of past and present members of teams, to thank him most heartily for his admirable services to School's rugby - nine years of coaching. The 1st XV wish him the very best of luck in his new situation - even though he will be teaching at a 'Soccer' school! We shall miss him. The team is very grateful to Mr Rhodes for his care of the pitches. We especially wish to thank Mrs Tate and Mrs Taylor and the Fifth-form girls who helped them, for all their hard work in preparing refreshments.

Last year's outstanding achievement tends to overshadow this year's promising performance. As only five of last year's team remained, the results are quite creditable. Because the back division had to be remoulded, it lacked drive in attack during the early part of the season, and consequently the tries were scored from the back row and scrum-half positions. Later on, the backs developed speed; they showed vitality in attack and stalwartness in defence. This, together with the zeal of the forwards, produced a well-balanced side. Trueman's exhilarating play deserves special mention. Our sincere thanks go to Mr Tate and Mr Taylor for their unceasing encouragement and advice. As this is Mr Taylor's last season, I wish, on behalf of past and present members of teams, to thank him most heartily for his admirable services to School's rugby - nine years of coaching. The 1st XV wish him the very best of luck in his new situation - even though he will be teaching at a 'Soccer' school! We shall miss him. The team is very grateful to Mr Rhodes for his care of the pitches. We especially wish to thank Mrs Tate and Mrs Taylor and the Fifth-form girls who helped them, for all their hard work in preparing refreshments.

Milner B: A very strong full back whose tackling has improved greatly. His kicking is excellent and he is very adept at joining in with the “three quarters” - but when doing this he should be careful not to find himself caught out of position.
Booth H: Booth is the youngest member of the side and has adapted himself well to his wing position. In attack he is very good, but his defensive play tends to be rather erratic.
Bruce K: A good, sound, conscientious player. His all-round ability has improved greatly. His stride is very deceptive and he uses it to good advantage in attack. In defence his cover tackling is outstanding.
Sale E: Sale, playing in the centre, has proved himself an ideal tactical player. He is a very strong runner and gives excellent reverse passes inside, which often prove fruitful. He tackles low and hard, but he tends to hold the ball a little too long at times. A very good Secretary.
Henry P.G.: Playing either on the wing or in the centre his very strong running over short distances often makes a gap in the opposing defence. His kicking for touch is very good but his main fault still is his tackling - he tends to go too high.
Stead J.R.: It is said that without a good outside half a Rugby team is not up to standard - in Stead the 1st XV have a brilliant footballer. In both defence and attack he is an ideal player to build a team round.
Whittaker R.J.: A scrum half who does his job effectively - his service from the set and loose scrums is fast and accurate. In defence he is outstanding - dropping on any loose ball in his own fearless manner. He kicks for touch well.
Hughes J.E.: A good prop forward whose play in the loose and in the line-out is outstanding. He must learn not to play the ball when in an off-side position.
Manning G.C.: As a hooker he has done amazingly well to overcome the handicap of being rather tall - unusual in such a position - and has given the team good service from the set scrums. He is always well up with play in the loose.
Clarke I.G.: He is a very good prop forward who pushes well in the set scrums. His work in the line-out is outstanding.
Ramsden D.: A second row forward who uses his weight to good advantage. He has plenty of spirit and sets a very good example to his colleagues.
Gorton R.: A second row forward who left us in mid-season. He works very hard in the loose and tackles well, but he must learn to play the ball immediately when tackled in possession.
Bruce R.: He has filled Gorton’s position with apparent ease, and, with a little more experience, he should do very well.
Dykes G.: As a loose forward Dykes is excellent. He is very smart round the scrum and often smothers the opposing scrum half - but he should concentrate a little more on shoving rather than being half down ready to break quickly.
Beckett C.: A terrifically hard tackler whose constant tackling has been one of the outstanding features of the season. As scrum leader he has been an inspiring example to his team-mates.
Eyre C.: A very good all-round player. He pushes well and breaks very quickly. Playing as loose forward he uses his speed to join in with the “three quarters.” His tackling is very good.
P. Schofield, L6S.
Schofield P.: This year’s captain, an inspiring leader and an excellent wing threequarter. Injuries kept him out of more than half the games but we anticipate a more fortunate season for him next year when his skill and experience should be of the greatest value to the team.

With over three-quarters of the 1950-51 season gone the 1st XV have sustained their brilliant form by only being beaten once in the 15 games played. Even in this game, which was played at Wath, the margin between the scores was down to 3 points. Team work again has been the foundation of our success. Throughout the season the standard of play has been very high indeed, with one exception; the place kicking has been very disappointing.
As regards coaching, much credit must go to Mr. Leonard, Mr. Lloyd, Mr. Swinbank, Mr. Allan, Mr. Taylor and Mr. Senior, for the time they have spent on the field.

Having returned to look at the website after some months, I am impressed by all your new work. Nothing like it exists for my old school at Pontefract or my wife's school at Doncaster. As with many of the teaching staff, Mr. Parkinson took part in extra-curricular activities, e.g. Cricket and Drama (1960-67). In Drama productions, Lighting and Sound Effects were his speciality. In one Staff production he also played one of the leading characters. This was in 1962's "Dead on Nine" by Jack Popplewell - April 11th, 12th, and 13th. The photographs below show his U15 (Colts) Cricket teams.

This year's Staff Play, produced by Mr. Crompton, had the intriguing title of "Dead on Nine". A tense modern thriller by Jack Popplewell, it centres round Robert Leigh, a writer, and his wife, Esmeralda, who live together in a state of mutual hatred so intense that each plots to kill the other. When
Robert's plan misfires, Esmeralda enlists the help of Tom Hammond, and tension builds up in the last scene when she contrives to make her husband stand in front of the window at a certain time, not knowing that Hammond, who was to shoot him, had already been murdered. Richard Farrow, a detective and a friend of the family, realises the truth, but the authorities do not, and an ironic situation develops at the end of the play where Leigh and his wife are astonished to find that their apparently cast-iron alibis have been destroyed and that they are about to be arrested - for the wrong crime.

“It sounds as though you may be interested in Memorabilia, and I wondered if you would like my copy of ‘Virginibus Puerisque’ which was presented to me when I became a prefect. A copy of the Prefect’s Promise is inside the front cover.

I pledge myself to put the school first in everything, to uphold its best traditions, actively to oppose what is wrong, to protect the weak, and to be humble in my office. This promise or oath was taken by those pupils of Hemsworth Grammar School who were chosen to be Prefects and had to be learned and recited on the stage before the whole school. The Headmaster then presented the Prefect's Badge. For me it was a terrifying moment when I had to read it out at Assembly in front of the whole school. A similar even more frightening experience was the morning I had to follow A.G.J. (Mr Jenkinson) down the corridor and on to the platform to read the morning lesson from the Bible. To my dying day I shall remember struggling to read,
“He that hath ears to hear, let him hear,” without muddling the aitches!!”
“Thinking back to the daily school routine, has anyone ever told you about our P.E. kit? Non existent. We just had to remove our gymslips and do P.E. in school blouses and navy knickers!!! A sight to behold. I well remember peeping out of the prefect’s room to see there were no boys around, and making a dash for the hall. As it was compulsory to change from outdoor shoes to plimsolls when we arrived at school in the morning, footwear was no problem. It can’t have been fun in the height of summer to spend the rest of the school day in a sweaty blouse! What a long way we have come since then.”

A. I didn't choose to come to Hemsworth Grammar School - Fate directed me here. I had been head of my own department for five or six years, and the only prospect of promotion was to apply for a headmastership. I applied for every vacancy that looked at all reasonable, and Hemsworth was just one of them. When I was told by my headmaster that enquiries were being made about me at a place called Hemsworth, I had to admit that I just did not know where it was. My being here is the work of Fate rather than my own choice."

I have lots of good memories of HGS…….In the Third Form (Year 9) we had the chance to go to South Elmsall Baths once a week to learn swimming – one of the highlights for me. Our P.E. teacher, Miss J.C. Harrison, took us. We were very impressed that she had trained at a Scandinavian College or University and proudly wore it’s badge on her tunic.
Mr Crossland used to travel from Leeds to Hemsworth every day, and was often already on the service bus I caught each morning, (no such thing as special school buses), and he often chatted to us. He was a perfect gentleman.
