The HGS site has been visited by people who were there at its birth and also when it closed. Virtually everyone is full of admiration for what the school achieved. I worked in the same department at Willowgarth High School as a former colleague of yours, Kath Ward. This was from 1969 to 1984. She was the Deputy Headteacher - a lovely lady and a true professional. We had a long telephone conversation in the summer and she will also be sending material to the site. The Radio Society
The Radio Society, which was only formed in 1952, is making good progress, and shows great promise for the coming year. The meetings have, so far, been spent in getting a thorough grounding in the principles of Radio Receiving and Transmitting and it has now been decided to devote the first part of future meetings to the study of morse code and amateur abbreviations. Owing to the lack of equipment, not many practical meetings have been held. We hope, however, in the near future, with the help from school funds, to buy our own communication receiver and build a transmitter. One of our biggest drawbacks so far has been the lack of literature and it would be of considerable advantage if the Library could be furnished with theoretical books and a monthly magazine. The Society would like to express its appreciation to Mr. Farrar above) for his help and advice.

A little before the end of the Easter Term, the staff encouraged and advised by Mr. Leonard, the producer (photo left), performed "Without the Prince" by Philip King. The performance was preceded by certain unfortunate occurrences. Firstly, Mr. Burnett, who was to take the part of Robert, was taken ill and had to be understudied by Mr. Young. On the actual day of the first performance, Mr. Young had to be rushed home ill, and no one who knew the part was left. Mr. Leonard, with a producer's acquaintance with the part to help him, immediately set to work to memorise the lines, and managed to give one of the best performances which we have had from him in a Staff play. Miss Harris, too, caused anxiety by developing a temperature on the day of the Wednesday show, but she managed to carry on, and, as usual, played her part beautifully. But why has this very able actress to he confined to the same type of part, year after year? We should like to see her given the opportunity to show her ability in different character studies. The entire action of the play takes place in the living room at Hill Top Farm, the home of the Weatherheads, in the village of Upper Netherwick.
We should especially like to congratulate those members of the staff who were acting on the stage for the first time; we think they did exceedingly well. The play was a great success and a definite improvement on some of the more recent Staff efforts.

I had an e-mail some time ago from Sheila introducing the site; I'm afraid it's taken me equally as long to get round to contacting you all. My years at HGS are remembered with great nostalgia and happiness. I was there from 1943 to 1950 and I can honestly say they were some of the best years of my life. Memories come flooding back when I read the entries on the site and I am pleased to say that my wife and I have attended a number of the reunions arranged by Mick Cleaver. My wife attended HGS 1943 to 1949. In 1949 she became RWH's Junior Secretary moving up to Senior Secretary in 1950. Her name then was Marie Johnson. We started our courtship at HGS in 1949 and married in 1954. This year sees our 50th wedding anniversary. I wonder how many more romances started like that and are still going?

During my time at HGS I was more interested in the sporting side of the curriculum, my forte being Athletics. In the earlier years I was eclipsed by those giants Les Tate and Derek Wilkinson. However, I did manage to achieve the Victor Ludorum in 1950 and also captain the victorious HGS Athletics team which won the Inter Schools Shield and the Senior Boys plaque at Huddersfield.
I think it's wonderful to find such an informative site dedicated to a school and staff who nurtured us in our formative years. I have many memories and I promise I will pass them on as I gather my thoughts; I have also a number of photographs covering those years both of myself and my wife Marie and I will scan them and pass them on to you. Many thanks to you and to Sheila for providing us with such an excellent site.

Thank you for getting in touch with the site. Your fond memories of HGS are echoed by many. I have identified you on some of the site's photos. In particular your Athletics team which won the Huddersfield Sports. Here we have a link as a dozen years later I held that same shield on behalf of the School. There are other links. On the 5C photo I can see Leighton Smith and Irene Wright. My wife and I met Leighton quite recently in Walton and last August we met Irene. Les Tate was my PE teacher at HGS and after college I worked with him at Dinnington High School. He was a keen competitor and sportsman even then. It was good to meet him again at the Mick Cleaver Reunion of the 24th March. Please think of the site as your own. I look forward to receiving your photos and memories.

The School Sports were held on July 12th and the afternoon proved to be one of the most exciting for several years, the destination of the trophies being in doubt until the closing events in many cases. The Championship Cup was won by Talbot with 313 points but it was not until the last two events that they overtook Holgate who finished second with 293.5 points. Price gained 187.5 points and Guest 175 points. The Standards Cup, awarded for the points gained by all members of the House who achieve set standards in the events, was won by Price. Altogether nine new records were set, up, viz:- Lawton (Mile), Clarke (Sen. 440 yards.), Pearson (Jun. 220 yards. and 440 yards.), Wilkinson (Int. Shot), M. Moore (Cricket Ball), M. Hawkins (Jun. 80 yards.), J. Taylor (Jun. Hop, Step and Jump) and B. Parker (Int. 150 yards.) The Senior Victor Ludorum Cup was won by Clarke, who throughout the summer ran consistently well and won the Northern Counties Junior 440 yards Championship. Wilkinson won the Junior Victor Ludorum. The Victrix Ludorum Cups were won by Eileen Booth (Senior) and Margaret Butterfield (Junior). Other trophies were won by Talbot (Relay Cup), Swift (Half Mile Cup) and Lawton (Mile Cup).

The school team was again highly successful at the Inter-School Sports. The combined Boys’ Team carried off the W.R.C.C. shield and the Senior boys won the plaque for their section. Excellent support for the seniors was given by the intermediate and junior boys and their performances promise well for the future. The girls did not shine and they seem to be going through a lean period as far as athletics are concerned. It was noticeable, however, that compared with the other schools, they were not lacking in enthusiasm. Full Athletics colours are awarded to Clarke, Allen and Henry.

Dear Sheila,
I’ve just discovered the web site and I’m thrilled! I was at HGS 1939-47 (Talbot) and was a little disappointed to see so few faces from that era. However it was good to see photos of my fellow athletes Pash Tate and Derek Wilkinson (I remember the site of the photo) and those of Messrs. Hamilton and Leonard. Actually we were very fortunate compared with other parts of the country, and I do not think any of our visits to the shelters were emergencies. I remember picking currants in the kitchen gardens for jam making and brewing coffee in large pans for the staff who were on fire watch duty. Obviously I have many more memories, especially of people, staff and pupils, who played such a significant part in my life. I have much to be thankful for. I left South Yorks when I left school, but I would love to hear something about my contemporaries at Hemsworth.

I’ve just discovered the web site and I’m thrilled! I was at HGS 1939-47 (Talbot) and was a little disappointed to see so few faces from that era. However it was good to see photos of my fellow athletes Pash Tate and Derek Wilkinson (I remember the site of the photo) and those of Messrs. Hamilton and Leonard. Sports Day 1946
Although, due to the snow, the annual cross country run had to be cancelled, the other events were held as usual. The highlight of the year is, of course, Sports Day. Last year, there was a very high standard of competition and four records were broken, one by Amy Hepton, one by Derek Wilkinson and two by Mary Griffiths. In the Girls’ High Jump Mary added a further 3¼ inches to the previous record of 4 ft 6 ins. The boys’ Senior Victor Ludorum was won by Derek Wilkinson and the junior counterpart by Brockhurst, D. On the girls’ side, Mary Griffiths gained the Senior Trophy and Amy Hepton the Junior. The champion house was Price, with Holgate a close second.
During the summer holidays a senior relay team competed at Castleford where they won a valuable silver cup. On the 21st of May this year, the school sent an Athletics team to the Huddersfield Inter School Sports, held for the first time since 1938. The team did exceptionally well and obtained 15 places. The senior girls were awarded a certificate for the most points scored, as were the senior boys. The boys’ combined team, Junior, Middles and Seniors, came out champions and achieved the distinction of winning the Shield. The girls had hard luck, failing by one point to emulate the boys’ feat.
