Phyllis Stoker (Head Girl 1930-31)
I came across your picture of my step-grandmother Phyllis Stoker in the victorious 1931 choir recently. Phyllis was delighted when my parents showed her the picture, and remembers the competition well. She spent many years working as a teacher in Kidderminster. Her interest in music has remained active. Phyllis asked me to mention that the teacher in the picture was Miss Phyllis Wright.

Hugh Hudson

It is amazing how memories and names come flooding back. The fear standing outside the Head's Study waiting to walk with him along the corridor to the Hall when it was your turn to read the lesson in assembly.
Pat Cockburn 1955-62
Ex-pupils could all write a long account of their relationship with this place - from their very first HGS day to possibly their last as a school pupil. This photograph certainly takes me back every time I see it. This was the centre of the school for me. It was a very well used place indeed and the wholes school met in here four times each week with the Prefects standing down the sides. As you look at the photo, the boys were on the left, girls on the right. You had to be very quiet and wait for the Headmaster to arrive and take the Assembly. Mr Hamilton would then arrive with a nervous Prefect who had to read the lesson of the day from the Bible while standing at the Lectern.
Activities in the Hall
Assemblies, P.E. lessons (and Pirates), Drama Productions, Concerts, Examinations, Dances, Wet Lunchtimes retreat.

During Morning Religious Assemblies, which also acted as a daily briefing, the Headmaster would stand at the Lectern and the Staff would sit on the chairs behind him. The boy Prefects would stand by the wall-bars on the right of the photograph and the girl Prefects would stand by the wall-bars on the left. Year groups would assemble with the First Form at the front of the Hall and then Year Groups in order of age with the Sixth Form at the back. This would happen on four days of the week with one day being reserved for eight House Assemblies in which boys and girls were separated into designated classrooms. The sub-divisions were: Guest House, Holgate House, Prices House and Talbot House. House Masters and Mistresses would also attend. Hymns were sung in the School Assemblies, with a member of staff or older pupil playing the piano. The Lord's Prayer was said at all assemblies.

The Honours Boards
In late 1931 an idea had been discussed by the Governors that Honours Boards in School would be a good method of displaying the academic successes of the pupils. A request had been made to the West Riding Education Authority for the requisite funds to supply and fix these Boards, and in February 1932 the reply of County Hall was received. The provision of Honours Boards was refused, "owing to the present need for economy". The Clerk to the Governors, Mr. Charles Crossley, reported that the Authorities had recommended a book in which to place the Honours Lists. The price of the Honours Boards would be about £15 / 0s / 0d, and the Book would cost a little over £2 / 0s / 0d. Capt. Hallam (one of the Governors) had an extreme reaction to this. He said that the Governors should press for the Boards to be installed, adding "the County Hall's suggestions are absolute tripe".

The economic circumstances in the country at that time (the Hungry Thirties) and especially in the North of England, meant that many of the 7 million people depending on the dole lived in the North, and riots provoked by hunger marchers were taking place in many cities. The refusal of the body which held the purse strings to supply such non-essential items can have come as no surprise to anyone other than the Governors!

The 1st XV, undefeated this season, has produced rugby of the standard expected of Hemsworth Grammar School. The play of both backs and forwards was excellent, with all the newcomers showing encouraging form. Of the more experienced team members, Appleby and Toulson deserve special mention, for their play has been outstanding. We reached the peak of our form just before Christmas when nine of our side were chosen to represent a South Yorkshire Schools' Team against a Huddersfield side in a county trial at Barnsley. The opposition included many fine footballers from the Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Wakefield, but we won fairly comfortably, 22 points to 11. For the School team, however, the highlight of the season was the Heath game, which ended in a draw after a spirited battle.

Ilkley Sevens
On March 29th a team consisting of Wild, Toulson, Trueman, Appleby, Ardron, Douglas and Moore represented the School at the annual Seven-a-side Tournament at Ilkley. 34 schools were competing, and the side gained distinction in this strenuous type of rugby by reaching the semi-finals. We were beaten 13-0 by Heath Grammar School, who went on to win the final.

Front Row L-R: Gail Picken, Nora Carlile, Dora Lumby, Gwen Cavanagh, Janice Hellewell

The 1959-60 season has been one of the most successful for many years. The team won 11 matches, drew 1, and lost 3. Throughout the season the team have had only 19 goals scored against them, and have succeeded in scoring 74. The fact that 7 members of last year’s team remained, proved a distinct advantage. The newcomers were J. Hellewell, D. Hughes, G. Picken and T. Cosgrove, who amply filled the vacant positions, and combined well with the rest of the team. On December 5th the Wakefield and District Hockey Trials were held in Wakefield. The school was represented by N. Carlile, C. Jordan and E. Toulson. Although two of these people were asked to go to further trials, neither was successful in the final selection.

At the end of the Autumn term the traditional Staff v. Girls match was played. The Staff won by 2-1 after a hard, fast game. The Annual Rally was held at Hemsworth on March 26th. In the first round Hemsworth beat Castleford 2-0, after a somewhat difficult game. They then went on to play Hillam, and won by 2-0. With these two victories Hemsworth gained maximum points on Pitch 1, and went forward to the final. The final was played between Percy Jackson Grammar School and Hemsworth. After a strenuously fast game Hemsworth narrowly defeated the Percy Jackson team by 1-0 after extra time. For the fiist time in the history of the competition, Hemsworth gained possession of the winner’s shield. All members of the team are grateful to Miss Musgrave who has worked with us enthusiastically throughout the season. We also thank Miss Tate, Miss Child, Mrs. Whittaker, Mrs. Williams and Miss Fish for the help they have given with matches and Mr. Rhodes for keeping the pitch in such fine condition.

4. 1922 The first Sports Day

The First Parents Day - July 22nd 1922
The plans were for Sports at two o'clock, then tea followed by songs and an exhibition of country dances afterwards. The weather almost spoiled this inaugural Saturday event, as the rain curtailed the sports events, and tea in the open air had to be abandoned altogether. All the tables were transferred into the classrooms at the last minute, and a large number of pupils, parents, Governors and Staff sat down together. The evening's programme of music and folk dancing was postponed until the following Wednesday.

Mr. Jenkinson was in charge of the arrangements, and several Governors acted as judges and stewards for the sports. Mr. S.G. Clift was the starter, Mr. E. Dickinson was marshal, and Miss M.A. Griffiths was recorder. All the points gained in the events
counted towards the inter-House Cup. The score after the Saturday sports was Holgate 55; Talbot 47.

32 of the premier rugby-playing schools of Yorkshire and Durham took part in the 3rd Annual Tournament at Ilkley On April 5th. The standard of play in this competition has improved greatly as schools have come to regard this as a regular event in the sports calendar in spite of this, however, Hemsworth won and deserved a place in the final. There were a few moments of doubt in the first round against Hymers College, Hull, when the score was 10-10, but the greater stamina of the Hemsworth team brought the 6 further points in the last few minutes. Gaining confidence from this success, the Hemsworth team went on to play delightful football in defeating Otley (11-0), Rothwell (16-0), and Silcoates (16-5). Their heavy defeat of Rothwell was particularly praiseworthy since Rothwell had previously eliminated last year's finalists, Wakefield, by 3-0. The Hemsworth success was due not to one or two individuals but to the unselfish way in which all kept the ball moving and did everything possible to avoid being tackled in possession. After giving the backs a good share of the ball from both scrum and line-out the forwards backed up well and there were occasions when the ball passed through every pair of hands on its way to the line. Heath G.S. had won the competition in 1951 and they still had 5 of last year's team available. Moreover, they had been given a bye into the second round and so had played only 3 games (v. Harrogate, Barnard Castle, and Keighley) to Hemsworth's 4 to reach the Final. Hemsworth was twice in the lead but, in the end, Heath won 11-6. They had one or two backs who were faster than anyone on the Hemsworth side but they had been kept in check by resolute tackling particularly by Stead and Sale, until the last few minutes. The Final is of longer duration than the other rounds and the fresher Heath team lasted the extra time better. They were greatly assisted too by vocal support from the touchline of greater volume than Hemsworth could provide.

The School Magazine of 1962 has this information about the Sevens Competitions in which HGS took part.

1962 (School Magazine)
Ilkley: Lost six points to three to Whitcliffe Mount G.S. in the Second Round.
Bridlington: Defeated in the semi-final 18-0 by Crossley and Porter G.S.
Barnsley: Won 16-5 in the final against Wath G.S."

I took part in these competitions playing at Prop. Mr. Tate (P.E.) prepared us to play in them. As in all sports, your preparation, performance and opponents more or less control the matches' final outcomes
Picture
Mr Tate (HGS Coach)

Ilkley (Second Round)
I played in this match. We did not play too badly and 6-3 was a very close result - but we went out of the competition. Whitcliffe Mount G.S. had a good team that year.

Bridlington (Semi-final)
I played in this match. We lost to Crossley and Portert G.S. in the semi-final. This was a remarkable result for that school as in the Under 15s  (see below) HGS beat them by 67 points to 3 at their school. Their progress afterwards as a group of rugby players was amazing.

Barnsdley (won the final)

This was our final Sevens competition of the season. Perhaps having played in the previous competitions helped us. I certainly enjoyed playing in this series of matches.

From the School Magazine
It has been a fairly successful season for the Colts. The team won their first few games before losing 15-14 to Silcoates, in the half-term game. Despite the absence of players at the South Yorkshire Trials, the team beat Wath (22-6) and Doncaster (31-6)quite decisively. The highlight of the season was the game against Wakefield, when we suffered our only home defeat (13-6). The double was achieved against Crossley and Porter who were defeated 67-3 in the away match. The season was rounded off with victories over Spurley Hey (20-6) and Nunthorpe (19-0). Field and Daley were outstanding amongst the forwards and the whole back division played well, especially Conway, Valentine and Bond. The team was captained by Parkin who was the most successful goal-kicker. Our thanks go to Mr. Pacy who gave up so much of his time to coach us and give us the benefit of his experience, and for his refereeing of matches. South Yorkshire XV: Five of the Colts' team represented South Yorkshire in two matches. They were Conway, Daley, Valentine, Field and McKenzie.

The leading try-scorers were Bond and McKenzie.
Match Record Played 15, Won 9, Lost 5, Drawn 1.
Points for 232, Points against 113.
