Mr. Tate (Head of P.E.)
Mr Tate was a former pupil at HGS and progressed through the school to become the Head Boy in School Year 1944-45 when Cynthia Hemmingway was the Head Girl. His start at HGS was difficult, as it was for everyone, as it was during WW2. He is shown on the photograph below - Middle Row, the pupil second from the left.
The extract below comes from the School Panoramic 1939-40

Mary Griffiths HGS 1939-47
Dear Sheila,
I’ve just discovered the web site and I’m thrilled! I was at HGS 1939-47 (Talbot) and was a little disappointed to see so few faces from that era. However it was good to see photos of my fellow athletes Pash Tate and Derek Wilkinson (I remember the site of the photo) and those of Messrs. Hamilton and Leonard. I started in September 1939 - that was the expectation, but our start was erratic as the air raid shelters were not ready. Actually we were very fortunate compared with other parts of the country, and I do not think any of our visits to the shelters were emergencies. I remember picking currants in the kitchen gardens for jam making and brewing coffee in large pans for the staff who were on fire watch duty. Obviously I have many more memories, especially of people, staff and pupils, who played such a significant part in my life. I have much to be thankful for. I left South Yorks when I left school, but I would love to hear something about my contemporaries at Hemsworth. Thanks for your work on the site.

The Front Row Hierarchy
If you look at the HGS Staff photographs, it will soon become evident that teachers on the front rows had usually worked at the school for much longer than those teachers on the rows further back. Post seniority was more important than years of served at HGS. This was first brought to my attention by Miss Ward when we were working in the same Geography Department (1969 to 1984). Miss Ward worked at HGS from 1948 to 1967 and she experienced those hierarchical ideas at first hand. We must also acknowledge that the photographer would have had the last say on composition.

When I was at HGS (1955-62) I never really thought about Staff changes. I knew that they happened but I was too busy trying to keep up with the standards being set by other pupils in my classes. If you had asked me then about Staff changes, I would have said that they were few in number. The first one that affected me noticeably was when I was in 2A. Miss Collins had been my Form Teacher in the First Year and in 2A. Then she got married and moved away. Mr Wall, a former HGS pupil himself, joined the Staff and became our new Form Teacher. There must have been many pupils who, over the years, found themselves in a similar situation. Different faces on the annual Staff photographs provide evidence for this as do the Staff lists in the Speech Day magazines.

Schools then, as now, had to be dynamic in the sense that they had to react quickly to maintain an effective boy of professionals. During the school's life of 46 years, there were many Staff changes. Some of these are itemised in the table below. Every name implies a Staff change at some time. A more complete list can be found on the Staff Section of this website. We were lucky in the fact that very few of the changes were to do with the Senior-ranked Staff. A single figure number over nearly half a century sounds good to me. Instead of chasing career development, were they going after job security and a wish to serve the local community? We will never know.
Mr Hamilton set a high number of Service Years with 30 in post. Mr Collette, however, set a remarkable number of 40 years at HGS, 1925 to 1965.

On a personal note, Mr Pacy was my Maths teacher for "O" level G.C.E. from 1958-60. I thought his method of teaching was excellent and I responded to it. To me he was patient, clear and concise. He was also my Cricket and Rugby Team Coach. I "propped" against him in two Staff Rugby Matches. We both had good games and he was very strong. When we met in 2005 he remembered that I played at "Prop". This was after a gap of 47 years. Just like Mr Collette, he always called me "Mac".

From the fact that the staff are Mr. Lloyd (Maths), Mr. Storer (Physics) and Mr. Jones (Chemistry) and that they are nearly all Prefects, I would suggest the group is a mixture of Upper and Lower 6 Science.

Echoing that, Frank. Additionally he didn't just stop me 'chatting' in class, he took the trouble to find out why (I couldn't see the board!) and insisted I informed my parents to take action!
