I started Hemsworth Grammar in 1927 and left in 1933. I was in the school choir and a Prefect, and thoroughly enjoyed my days there. I'll never forget the day I opened that green door in the stone wall and looked into what looked like heaven after Grimethorpe Primary!

I have many fond memories of H.G.S., a beautiful building with those gorgeous magnolias as you walked up the driveway, the shuttered windows and that impressive staircase. The Green Gate was the entry to a special world.

School Grounds 1923
The School grounds have been improved. The cricket field is systematically being rolled, and a very good pitch should be available next term. The boys, under Mr. Manning, have laid a tennis court, but it will want a lot of rolling before It is good for play. It is proposed to have sheep on the cricket ground as soon as possible to eat down the out-field, but in order to make this into really useful ground it will probably be necessary to plough it all up next autumn, and harrow it and sow it. We are anxious to see this done in order that we may have good out-field for cricket and a sports ground for the athletic sports. The girls' hockey ground is improving with use but is still very rough. Boys have had perforce to take to Rugby Football, and it is no bad change for them. Fives goes ahead well, and the Fives Court has been re-pointed and plastered.

The South Walk in 1923 Facing towards the Green Gate
I always enjoyed this part of the walk to and from school. Usually I came to HGS on the Upton bus, but after practices I would walk down into Hemsworth to get the bus home. This meant using the South Walk down to The Green Gate. It was just about always tranquil. The rooks in the trees could make a noise but I quite enjoyed it for the short time I used the South Walk. Sometimes I could only hear the bells of St Helen's Church ringing the time. That was very pleasant.
One time in the Summer, I could hear the bells in the distance and then Mr Collette came down the Girls Walk to the Green Gate on his way home. He was walking through the grounds by himself just like he had done for so many years. A magic moment.
